The hilltop offers a stunning panoramic view of the city, underscoring the contrast between urban development and the reserve’s natural beauty. The reserve’s slopes feature restored ploughed fields on the east and near-pristine Swartland shale renosterveld on the west.

The Tygerberg Nature Reserve is situated in the northern districts of Cape Town. Designated as a Section 23 Nature Reserve according to the Protected Areas Act in 2016, this sanctuary spans 388 hectares and showcases an impressive collection of 562 distinct plant species. Among these, 23 face endangerment, 8 exclusively thrive in the Cape Town region, and 3 are solely native to the Tygerberg area.

The array of biodiversity within this habitat is extensive, encompassing 24 diverse mammal species, 137 varieties of avian life, 22 different kinds of reptiles, 7 types of frogs, and a multitude of butterfly species. The vista from the apex of the reserve’s hill is truly breathtaking, providing a panoramic 360-degree outlook of the cityscape and underscoring the scarcity of natural greenery amidst the urban expansion. On the reserve’s eastern slope, aged plowed fields are undergoing restoration, while the western incline borders the nearly untouched Swartland shale renosterveld ecosystem.
