Explore this 13.4-kilometer loop trail located near Maluti A Phofung NU, Free State. This trail is typically considered a challenging route, with an average completion time of approximately 5 hours and 10 minutes. It’s a favored trail among outdoor enthusiasts, suitable for hiking and walking, allowing you to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the area.

Embark on this scenic hike, commencing at Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge. The trail gracefully descends into the picturesque Mahai valley, leading you through enchanting forests and across babbling rivers. A slightly challenging climb awaits as you make your way to the breathtaking Gudu falls, nestled within the lush Gudu forest. This spot serves as an ideal location for a serene picnic and, if you’re feeling adventurous, a refreshing swim in the crisp mountain waters.

Afterwards, retrace your path until you locate the sign for “The Crack.” This segment involves a moderately steep ascent through a narrow gulley in the cliff-face, where you’ll encounter two wooden ladders and one chain ladder to aid in your upward journey. Upon conquering “The Crack,” a more gentle uphill section guides you back to the lodge’s parking lot, completing your invigorating hiking experience.
