There are very few urban mountain bike trails parks within a secure boundary in Gauteng. Huddle Park is one of them. Located in the Linksfield area, not far from the N1, Huddle Park offers a safe, stimulating trails park that’s close to most residential areas in the South and East of the city. Outside peak traffic times it’s also fairly quick to reach via the N1 freeway from the North of the city.
Trails: Huddle Park is a multi-recreational activity venue. There’s a golf course, an Acro-Branch facility, a Cross-Fit gym and an equestrian club. The land is either fairly flat or gradually sloping. The mountain bike trails use most of the perimeter as well as a more dedicated trails section on the west end of the property. They’re largely uncomplicated and flowing and ideal for beginner and intermediate level riders. There are different trails that offer 4, 6, 10, 15 and 20km distance options. But you can customise your distance and trails combinations to suit you.
The signage is good but it can be a bit confusing at the far corner of the park where a number of trails cross each other. Fortunately, even if you take one you didn’t intend to, there’s no significant penalty and you can select a different route when you roll back to that point.
Local tip: The trails are used by trail-runners and dog-walkers so avoid early morning and dusk if you want to have a free-flowing ride.
Safety: There are secure boundary fences and walls and a security-controlled boom at the entrance/exit making it one of the safest places to ride.
Operating hours: Summer: 06h30-18h00; Winter: 07h00-05h30
