The course is 5000m (5k) long. This has been accurately measured by us with a professional measuring wheel. The course is in Bryanston, Johannesburg. The course is run on a mixture of gravel paths and grass trail paths. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain. Dependent on availability, marshals will be at key sections of the course, or signs will be in place.
Course Description
The start is at Riverside Park opposite the Riverside Shopping Centre at the corner of Bryanston Drive and River road. parkrunners will run in a northerly direction from the park and go down a narrow embankment to join the Braamfontein Spruit Trail.
The first 1.5 kilometers are relatively flat double jeep track with the grass edges cut back. The pathways have occasional rocks and runners should be careful not to trip on the uneven surfaces.
At approximately the 1.5Km distance, near an electricity pylon, there is a bottleneck on the route where outgoing and incoming runners meet. Outgoing runners should stay left and will go up a slight hill for about 200m. At the top part of the hill the course turns right and goes across to the other side of this park area bordered by Hamilton road. Runners now head in a down ward direction following the road and turn left where the road turns into Devonshire road. At the end of Devonshire road where it meets with 12th Avenue, runners will turn around a large tree and head back on the inward loop of their run.
They will cross a wooden pedestrian and cyclist bridge and continue along the pathway back toward the pylon and bottleneck point where outgoing runners come through. At this point incoming runners must take a left turn and follow the path that runs next to the river so they avoid any slower outgoing runners.
This pathway, follows the course of the river and eventually emerges and joins the outgoing main trail about 1km from the end. Runners will now approach the embankment that they came down at the start but will stay left below the park for a short distance before they come to a short steep paved path leading up to the park.
Once they have reached the upper park, they will follow the twisty paved path along the park edge for approximately 100 metres before passing the time keeper and entering the finish tunnel.
